Choosing Between Synthetic or Conventional Oil
There’s a clear, easy-to-understand difference between synthetic and conventional oil. Whereas both oil types are made from refining oil, synthetic oil is somewhat man-made; it’s made from a base oil and powder additives.
Synthetic oil uses higher-quality base oils compared to conventional oils. The result? Conventional oils are less chemically stable, likely to oxidize or acidify much easier, and they’re typically much quicker to break down compared to its synthetic counterpart.
Benefits of Synthetic Over Conventional Oil
As we touched on above, there are clear differences between synthetic and conventional oil in the way they’re engineered. However, what are some of the long-term benefits of choosing synthetic over traditional motor oil?
- It keeps your engine cleaner. Synthetics contain fewer impurities than traditional oil, which in turn better resists sludge and oil deposits in your engine.
- Flows better in cold temperatures. Synthetic oil allows oil to flow smoothly throughout the engine, even if a car has been unused in low temperatures.
- Protects better in high temperatures. You’ll find that synthetics are engineered to combat high engine temperatures to keep your motor running smoothly.
- Offers greater engine protection. One active ingredient commonly found in synthetic oil is its ability to retain wear protection for considerably longer than conventional oil.
Can I Switch Between Synthetic and Conventional Oil?
Simply put, the answer is yes, you can switch between synthetic and conventional oil. Although different in their engineering, they both ultimately serve the same purpose to keep your car running. However, there is one important caveat to consider if you want to switch back and forth.
High-mileage vehicles ought to be given the oil type it’s typically been given. Because of the age and the mileage of the vehicle, it’s likely that significant build-up of sludge and oil despoils will be present. In this scenario, it’s better to stick with the synthetic or traditional motor oil you’ve used in order to avoid adding to the oil buildup.
