Green Lights

You’ll probably see some green lights on after you start your truck. These are a type of indicator light. Their job is to let you know that a feature or function is active. Some of the green lights you’ll probably see include:

  • Cruise ControlAuto Start/Stop—The letter A in a semi circle is a sign that your auto start/stop function is on.
  • Cruise Control/Adaptive Cruise Control—When you turn cruise control on, you’ll see a light that looks like your odometer. For Adaptive Cruise Control, you’ll see a similar light that includes both the odometer and a car.

Yellow Lights

A yellow light is a different kind of indicator light. When a part or system malfunctions or needs maintenance, you’ll see a yellow light. They’re not urgent, but you should get them taken care of a soon as possible. Some yellow indicator lights you should know include:

  • Tire LightABS—The letters ABS stand for your anti-lock braking system. When there’s a problem, you’ll see them inside a yellow circle. You won’t have to pull over but should get your brakes fixed soon.
  • Tire Pressure Monitor System—The TPMS light looks like a tire and comes on when the air pressure in one of more of your tires is low.
  • Malfunction Indicator—Most drivers are familiar with this as the check engine light because its icon looks like your engine. If you see this illuminated, it can be caused by several things, but usually it’s a sign of trouble with the emissions system.

Red Lights

A red light is a more serious warning. These service problems should not be ignored. Many of them require a tow truck or immediate service. Some of the red lights you should look out for include:

  • Oil LightBrake Warning Light—Seeing the word BRAKE on your dashboard in red letters is a more serious malfunction. It’s not safe to drive with faulty brakes, so pull over right away.
  • Oil Pressure Warning—If you’re severely past due for an oil change, you’ll see a light that looks like an old-fashioned oil can. Continuing to drive without enough oil can damage your engine.
  • Engine Temperature—When you’re low on coolant, you may see a light that looks like a thermometer. This means that your engine is overheating.
  • Charging System—A bad battery or a faulty alternator can cause a light that looks like your battery to pop up. In this case, drive to the service center right away. You may not be able to start your truck again if you turn the engine off. To conserve power, turn off features, like the infotainment system or climate control.
