Tough pickups like the Ford F-250 and the Ram 2500 are designed to help you move your cargo across all kinds of terrain. So, which one’s more prepared to tow a trailer or carry a heavy payload? The team at Town and Country Ford finds out for drivers in Port Arthur, Nederland, and Lake Charles in this Ford F-250 vs. Ram 2500 comparison.

Engines & Specs

Ford F-250 Engine The 2020 Ford F-250 offers three powerful engines to choose from. This capable lineup starts off with a 6.2L V8 engine that gets up to 385 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. Next, you’ll find a larger 7.3L V8 engine that offers up to 430 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. Finally, there’s a 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel engine. It delivers up to 475 horsepower and an impressive 1,050 lb-ft of torque.

The 2020 Ram 2500 only offers two engines. While it does give you a choice between gas and diesel, neither engine can provide you with as much power as the F-250. The first option is a 6.4L HEMI® V8 that gets up to 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. The other engine is a 6.7L Cummins® Turbo Diesel engine that gets up to 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque.

Towing

2020 Ford F-250 Towing

With all that power under the hood, both pickups can haul lots of cargo. They’re also prepared for both traditional and 5th-wheel/gooseneck towing. The 2020 F-250 is capable of towing up to 22,800 pounds. The 2020 Ram 2500 can only tow up to 19,680 pounds.

On top of towing over 3,000 pounds more, the Ford features lots of technology that makes towing safer and easier. Trailer Sway Control comes standard to keep your cargo under control, while a BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with Trailer Coverage and Cross-Traffic Alert will help you change lanes safely.

A Rear View Camera with Dynamic Hitch Assist also comes standard to help you line up your truck with your trailer. You can also check on your cargo with the 360-Degree Camera with Split-View Display. It uses a series of cameras to provide you with multiple angles and create an overhead view.

You’ll even have an easier time backing up with your trailer attached. Pro Trailer Backup Assist™ lets you steer using a dial on the dashboard. Just turn it in the direction you want your trailer to go, and your truck will reverse for you.

The Ram 2500 also features trailer stability, blind spot monitoring, and a camera system. While it can show you several angles while you’re backing up, it doesn’t offer anything that operates quite like Pro Trailer Backup Assist™.

Payload

Both trucks run on a versatile suspension and include a tough truck bed. The 2020 Ford F-250 can carry a payload of 4,260 pounds. The Ram 2500 can’t manage quite as much cargo. It can only carry a payload of 4,010 pounds.
