Ford Explorer Towing Capacity
The Ford Explorer is a dependable midsize SUV that’s designed to carry lots of cargo. While it comes with a large trunk, you’ll also be able to bring a trailer along for the ride.
Just how much can this powerful SUV tow? Energy Country Ford finds out. We looked at the Ford Explorer towing capacity, so families in Port Arthur and Nederland, TX, will know what it’s capable of.
Ford Explorer Specs
The Ford Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds. With that kind of power, you can tow a boat down to the Gulf Coast, hitch a big trailer to your SUV, or bring a camper on your next family vacation. To get that kind of towing capacity, the Explorer runs on a 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 engine that gets up to 365 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque.
If you’re interested in a more exciting drive, an Enhanced 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 is also available. It can still tow up to 5,600 pounds but delivers up to 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque.
Overall, the Explorer offers four powertrains. The base engine is a 2.3L EcoBoost® 4-cylinder that gets up to 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. It can tow up to 5,300 pounds.
Finally, the 3.3L V6 hybrid powertrain balances performance and fuel economy. It can tow up to 5,000 pounds and cover a lot of ground in between stops for gas. The Ford Explorer Hybrid can get up to an EPA-estimated 27 city/29 highway MPG.
Towing Features & Technology
The Ford Explorer also makes towing easy by offering lots of helpful features. For example, you can quickly line up with your trailer using the standard Rear View Camera.
Once you’re on the road, you can rely on Trailer Sway Control to keep everything balanced and in line with your SUV. You’ll also feel comfortable changing lanes while your trailer is attached, thanks to the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with Cross-Traffic Alert.
If you’d like some extra visibility while you’re maneuvering with your trailer, you can add a 360-Degree Camera. It uses a series of cameras to create a bird’s-eye view of your SUV.
Cargo Capabilities
The Ford Explorer has a spacious interior. With folding seats and a large trunk, it’s got room for practically everything that doesn’t require a trailer. There’s 18.2 cubic feet of space in the trunk. If you fold the third-row seats down, you’ll have 47.9 cubic feet. If you need to load even more, you can fold the second row down, too, and get up to 87.8 cubic feet of cargo room.
Roof rails are also available for longer cargo and things that you’d rather keep outside. They’re a great option for carrying lumber, kayaks, or a Christmas tree.
