Ford Explorer vs Honda Pilot

The Ford Explorer and Honda Pilot are two great options for families. They both feature three rows of seats, lots of cargo room, and reliable safety features. Which one is right for you, though?

Energy Country Ford finds out. We put this 2021 Ford Explorer vs. Honda Pilot comparison together to help families in Port Arthur and Nederland, TX, decide.

Ford Explorer vs Honda Pilot: Safety Features

Your family is your most precious cargo. To help protect them, the 2021 Ford Explorer was built with side-impact beams and eight airbags. All-wheel drive is offered on every trim level, so you’ll be able to enjoy a safe and stable drive in any conditions.

To help prevent accidents, there’s Ford Co-Pilot360™. This bundle of driver-assistive features gives you more awareness while you drive, with intelligent technology such as:

  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane Keeping System
  • Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Rear View Camera

The 2021 Honda Pilot also has a well-designed frame, but it only includes six airbags. Its standard Honda Sensing® system includes some similar driver-assistive features, but it doesn’t include a blind-spot monitor or a rear cross-traffic alert.

Ford Explorer vs Honda Pilot: Passenger & Cargo Room

On top of keeping your family safe, the 2021 Ford Explorer is also designed to help them get comfortable. It comes with three rows of seats and features lots of room to stretch your legs. Feel free to over-pack, too. The Explorer includes a large trunk and folding second- and third-row seats that can help you load more.

The 2021 Honda Pilot also comes with three rows of seats, but it can feel a bit cramped for tall drivers and passengers in the back seat. It also has a smaller trunk, so you won’t be able to carry as much cargo.

Ford Explorer vs Honda Pilot: Performance

With available all-wheel drive and lots of power under the hood, you can count on the Ford Explorer to get the job done. Whether you’re driving through rough storms or taking a trailer on your next family road trip, it’s got you covered.

The first few trim levels are powered by a 2.3L 4-cylinder engine that gets up to 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. With that kind of power, you’ll be able to tow up to 5,300 pounds. If you’d like to haul a bigger trailer or enjoy a more exciting drive, a turbocharged 3.0L V6 is also available. It uses its 365 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque to tow up to 5,600 pounds.

The 2021 Honda Pilot isn’t quite as much fun to drive. Its 3.5L V6 only gets up to 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. This also limits its towing capacity to just 5,000 pounds.
